Biography

Dr. Kellsie Prather is an Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Utah State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Science from the University of Georgia, as well as a bachelor's degree in early childhood education and a master’s degree in reading education from Ohio University. Her background in education, including teaching in both public and private school settings, continues to shape her approach to the college classroom. She is committed to creating engaging and accessible learning experiences that help students connect course concepts to their own lives, families, communities, and future careers. She especially values opportunities for students to apply what they are learning and to recognize the many ways that knowledge of human development and families can be useful across personal and professional settings. Her work focuses on parenting, parent–child relationships, and the family and community contexts that shape children’s and families’ experiences. She is particularly interested in understanding how families navigate economic and social challenges, the ways parents support children’s emotional development, and the processes that help families adapt and thrive. Her research centers on rural and under-resourced communities and emphasizes the importance of understanding families within the contexts in which they live. Dr. Prather is committed to community-engaged and applied research that not only advances understanding of family processes but also produces knowledge that is meaningful and useful to families, practitioners, and communities.
